Proxy servers

These days, the scammer uses multiple tricks like package rerouting, proxy servers, and VoIPs to hide the caller's exact physical location. They make unsolicited calls to sell bogus plans impersonating authentic authorised websites or approved government numbers.

The communications are rerouted to appear to be coming from a different location or overseas. The fraudsters try to hide their identity and place of operation to commit fraud and prevent legal action.

Phishing is the common tactic where proxy servers intercept the communications, impersonate authorised firms, and operate with the desired approved numbers. They create fake login pages that connect to real bank sites, and the users are trapped into filling their real details into their sites.

They collect such registration details of visitors who visit their fake page and use it to defraud the bank's clients. In addition, they send spam emails that purport to be coming from the bank but may contain a link to the spoofed website.

In most instances, the fake servers collect information through login pages, which is used to scam bank customers.

The scammers use other methods, like using a VoIP number – Voice over where the number appears to be coming from a recognised authorised office. However, even VoIP offers anonymity to the caller.

In some cases, the frauds send emails with subscription services. The user is redirected to a website that seeks background checks and contact details to confirm the plan, often indicting a suspicious action.

Although VoIP or proxy is not necessarily cheating, it offers provisions to hide information used by the frauds.

In some cases, they use simple tricks like rerouting the package to get it delivered to their location. The method of operation may appear simple but can be extremely sophisticated, and the authentic seller or the cardholder may lose funds into such transactions.

Often people reroute their package delivery to their workplace, which makes it difficult to track. Still, online websites have identified the risks and modified their operations to ensure the authentic buyer approves the reroute. Further, one should seek legitimacy in all such deals to avoid a loss.
